Missional Living

Missional Living at Gospel Village

At Gospel Village, we believe housing alone doesn’t end homelessness—community does. Rooted in this belief, Missionals are a vital part of the fabric of our neighborhood.

Who Are Missionals?

Missionals are individuals and families who feel a deep calling to live in intentional community with neighbors transitioning out of chronic homelessness. They pay their own way to live at Gospel Village and volunteer their time, serving as a consistent, compassionate presence. Missionals make up about 20% of our Village population and are deeply committed to the mission and values of Gospel Inc.

Missionals aren’t staff—they’re neighbors. Neighbors who step in, lift up, and walk alongside others, offering their gifts with humility, prayer, and purpose.

A Calling, Not a Requirement

Some people go around the world to serve. Our Missionals answer that same call—without ever leaving Polk County.

Inspired by Jesus’ words in Matthew 25, Missional living is about responding to the needs of “the least of these” in our own community. Whether someone is facing mental illness, addiction, or trauma, our Missionals are present—seeing Christ in His “most distressing disguise,” as Mother Teresa once said.

Living missionally isn’t about doing the bare minimum. It’s about intentionality—knowing and being known, loving and being loved. Missionals give generously of their time and talents, and often receive even more: friendship, laughter, trust, and a deep sense of belonging.

The Discernment Process

Becoming a Missional is a journey. We want every discerning neighbor to understand the unique culture of Gospel Village before making this life-giving commitment.

The discernment process typically takes 6–9 months (or longer). During this time, potential Missionals serve weekly at the Village, build relationships with residents, and experience the rhythm of community life.

With guidance from our team, this season of exploration creates space for prayer, connection, and clarity—helping each individual decide if this is where God is calling them to be.
